Volunteer FAQs

FAQs for Prospective Volunteer Drivers

What do I need to do to volunteer with Second Helpings Atlanta (SHA)?

In order to be a volunteer driver for SHA, you’ll need a valid Driver’s License.  If you’re not interested being a driver, we have other volunteer opportunities available.  Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Monique Sorrell, at moniquesporrell@secondhelpings.info for details.

When are most routes scheduled?

SHA does food rescues seven days a week.  Most of our routes occur during the morning (7:30 – 11:00 AM) and we have a small number of early afternoon routes as well.  We currently have no regularly scheduled pick-ups during the evening.

How long does a typical food rescue take?

Picking up and delivering food donations generally takes about 90 minutes. Most volunteers pick up donated food once a month although we’re happy to find additional routes every month if you’re interested.

If a Volunteer has a small car, can they still volunteer?

Absolutely.  Many routes do not require a large vehicle.  Although we do have some routes where an SUV or mini-van is necessary, many can be handled with a small vehicle.

How many times does a volunteer need to drive?

Generally, a volunteer picks up and delivers food donations once a month although we’re happy to find additional routes every month if you’re interested.

What length of commitment are we looking for?

We ask that volunteers sign up for a 12 month commitment.  If you cannot commit to rescuing food once per month, please consider becoming one of our substitute drivers.

What does it mean to drive a route for Second Helpings Atlanta (SHA)?

Every day SHA conducts dozens of food rescues across the Metro Atlanta area where our volunteers, driving their personal vehicles, pick up fresh, nutritious food and deliver it to a nearby Partner Agency where it is distributed.  Food Donor locations typically do not have staff available to help load the volunteer’s vehicle while some Partner Agencies do assist in the unloading of food at their facilities. Food needs to be weighed and reported after every food rescue using our simple on-line reporting form.

Can a volunteer’s children help?

YES!  We love when children rescue food with their parents.  It is a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time together helping those in need.  We also have teen drivers that pick up and deliver donated food alone or with parents and friends

Can groups volunteer together?

Most groups “adopt” a route and assign teams of two people to pick up and deliver rescued food. Most routes cannot accommodate more than 2 people on a single route on any given day.  Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Monique Sorrell, at moniquesorrell@secondhelpings.info to discuss group volunteer activities.

FAQs for Current Volunteers

What does a Volunteer do if they cannot drive their scheduled date?

It is the Volunteer’s responsibility to email the driving team for their specific route to see if anyone can trade or cover the assigned date.  If you need a last minute substitute (same day cancellation), please call the Volunteer Coordinator right away at (470)-465-0987.

What supplies do I need to drive my route?

Every route is different – some require that the Volunteer bring coolers or ice packs to keep frozen food cold; most routes only require garbage bags, boxes, or plastic reusable totes.  Many Food Donors will have boxes available for use, but this is not a guarantee.  Some Food Donors have specific bins used exclusively for that Food Donor.  When you join a route, we will share the specific logistical details with you
