SHA On Your Way: Black History Month

For Black History Month, we’re spotlighting our amazing food network partners with rich legacies in Atlanta’s civil rights movement. We are honored to work closely with this community to fight hunger and food waste.

For our first SHA On Your Way this month, check out The National Center for Civil and Human Rights while on a food rescue route from Whole Foods Midtown to the Salvation Army! The National Center for Civil and Human Rights inspires people to tap their own power to change the world around them. The Center’s iconic exhibitions feature the papers and artifacts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the history of the civil rights movement and stories from the struggle for human rights around the world today. Join us to Drive Out Hunger this Black History Month.

As we continue to drive out hunger during Black History Month, we’re highlighting the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park located off Auburn Ave. Encompassing nearly 35 acres, the family-friendly and free Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park is composed of landmarks, monuments and exhibits. Take a journey through the civil rights movement as well as the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, after completing a food rescue route from the Westminster Schools to Gathering Industries.

For 135 years, Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church has played a vital role in the fight against racism and the civil rights movement. It was the spiritual home of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. And today, its senior pastor and Georgia’s first Black senator, Rev. Raphael Warnock preaches from its pulpit. Join us to rescue food from Mercedes Benz Stadium and deliver it to Gathering Industries. On the way, you can check out Ebenezer Baptist. You’ll be helping your neighbor by reducing food insecurity and waste in Atlanta.

For our art lovers! Experience the Hammonds House Museum while rescuing food from Trader Joe’s and delivering it to our partner agency, Westside Works. Nestled on a quiet residential street in Atlanta’s historic West End, Hammonds House explores the cultural diversity and legacy of artists of African descent. For 35 years, Hammonds House has been a mecca for people seeking inspiration, interaction, and intellectual stimulation centered on art of the African Diaspora.

Don’t miss this stop on SHA On Your Way. Since the 1960s, Paschal’s has been a famous meeting place for key civil rights leaders and strategists, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his lieutenants. In fact, the Paschal brothers would often post bond for arrested protestors. They would also serve free meals and extend hours to provide a central location where parents and friends could greet their loved ones after their release from jail. Conveniently located on Northside Drive, you can plan a stop to Paschal’s after your Wednesday route from Whole Foods to Atlanta City Baptist Mission.

Enjoy the sights and smells of the Municipal Market on Auburn Ave after completing a food rescue from the Federal Reserve to our partner agency, Safehouse Outreach. The Municipal Market of Atlanta was established in 1918 after the Great Atlanta Fire of 1917 wiped out the large livestock and produce tent where farmers sold their wares, as well as nearly 2,000 nearby homes. A year later, the Atlanta Women’s Club launched a fund-raising drive, and in 1925 a fireproof brick structure opened. At the time, Black people were allowed to shop inside the market but could only sell their products on the curb outside. Today, the Sweet Auburn Curb Market features 28 independently owned spaces with retailers who sell sweets, meats, seafood and produce.
