August 2022 ~ The Latest From Second Helpings Atlanta

It’s hard to believe that we are almost through August and that our first-ever community fundraiser is just around the corner! On Monday, August 29, we will celebrate the founding and history of Second Helpings Atlanta and honor two of our amazing supporters, Liz Blake and Sheri Labovitz at Full Plates, Full Hearts at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

How far we’ve come!

Second Helpings Atlanta began 18 years ago because the clergy leadership at Temple Sinai along with  Guenther Hecht, Alli Allen, and Shirley Bernes Leaderman had a desire to help the community. Their collaborative efforts allowed us to evolve into the organization we are today.

We honor them and all of the loyal volunteers and supporters who have done  so much heavy lifting over the years.

Sheri Labovitz is one of those loyal volunteers, serving on the Board of Directors, becoming board president, acting as the de facto development director, driving countless food rescue routes, and so much more. Her dedication to SHA also gave us the gift of Liz Blake. Sheri and Liz’s friendship blossomed because of their mutual desire to make the world a better place. And Liz’s commitment enabled us to expand our network, putting us in a position to rescue more food and share it with thousands of people experiencing food insecurity.

We’ve rescued over 18 million pounds of food since we began all those years ago. We’ve expanded beyond food rescue and now also provide meals to food insecure neighbors. We have a warehouse space for short-term storage and volunteer projects as well as an office, and 8 hardworking people on our team! We owe so much to everyone who helped launch and sustain us as well as to all those who played a role in getting us to where we are today.

Thank you for all you do. We have so much to be proud of and to celebrate!
