For Super Bowl LIII, Sustainability Is Key

Fighting Food Waste with SHA

Second Helpings Atlanta’s mission is to fight hunger by rescuing nutritious perishable food and delivering it to a variety of Partner Agencies in the greater metro Atlanta area. Every day, SHA combats food waste and by doing so, we keep large quantities of fresh food out of landfills. Currently, our 470+ Volunteer Drivers collect and distribute more than 125,000 pounds of surplus nutritious food per month – imagine the impact this has on Atlanta’s hungry, and on our environment!

Super Bowl LIII – Fighting Food Waste

Super Bowl LIII is keenly focused on the sustainability of this mega-event, including a wide array of activities and actions to help keep waste out of landfills.

Right now, SHA is working closely with members of the NFL’s Sustainability team, and we will rescue surplus food from sanctioned corporate events leading up to Super Bowl LIII taking place in Atlanta on February 3, 2019. We will also be rescuing food from the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the site of Super Bowl LIII, and food will be distributed to nearby Partner Agencies on the Westside, Downtown & Midtown areas of town.

More than twenty SHA Staff members and Volunteers have received security credentials to pick up food within the security zone that’s been established around the stadium and nearby venues. Here’s a list of some of the confirmed food rescues that Second Helpings Atlanta will handle in the next few weeks, with many more to come:

  • Host Committee Media Party (Aquarium)
  • NFL House (Southern Exchange)
  • Taste of the NFL (Cobb Galleria)
  • Super Bowl Tailgate Party (State Farm Arena)

Mercedes-Benz USA Partnership

As a result of our partnership with Mercedes-Benz USA, SHA will receive a Strider van on loan for two weeks to help with these and other Super Bowl LIII food rescues, Thank you Mercedes-Benz USA!
