Volunteer of the Year Rescued More Than 70,000 Pounds in 2017

On January 21, Second Helpings Atlanta hosted its annual Volunteer Appreciation Event at Temple Sinai, and recognized its Volunteer of the Year, Jonathan Calvis, with the Lenny Award for his outstanding contributions to the organization and community. This award, created in honor of Lenny Greenstein, a former SHA volunteer, was presented by Sheri Labovitz, President, and Joe Labriola, Executive Director.

“Jonathan was responsible for the majority of routes requiring the use of our refrigerated truck in 2017, and he is always willing to take on an additional route as the need arises. Our truck routes are required for our largest pick-ups and often take half a day to complete. In the last 12 months alone, he has rescued more than 70,000 pounds of food, enough to provide nearly 58,000 meals to those in need,” said Labriola. “He is an inspiration to all of us!”

In 2017, SHA rescued a total of 1,530,976 pounds of food, a 13% increase over 2016, including 22,035 pounds of food from the Mercedes Benz Stadium and Philips Arena. In total, SHA managed 7,384 pick-ups and deliveries (an average of 144 per week), and the average food rescue is 207 pounds (=173 meals).
