Yes You May! Fighting Hunger and Food Waste This Month

The month of May brings plenty of opportunities for getting involved in the fight against hunger.

1) Food that Rocks Sandy Springs is an evening food and music festival that benefits 3 charities, including Second Helpings Atlanta (SHA). Presented by Taste of Atlanta and TasteATL, Food That Rocks features food from over 25 great local restaurants, live music performances, and wine, beer and cocktail tastes. Our own Myron Smith is one of the honorary co-chairs of the event! SHA will rescue the leftover event food and deliver it to Malachi’s Storehouse.

We spend so much time rescuing food that we don’t often meet face to face. So, I hope you’ll come on down to Hammond Park, check out the SHA raffle and say “Hello!” on May 14th. I’ll be hovering near the SHA booth after 9pm to help with Tear Down/Food Rescue Duty.

Date & Time: May 14, 2016 from 7pm-11pm
Location: Hammond Park, Sandy Springs
Cost: Food That Rocks Tickets are $55 in advance, $65 at the door. Use online discount code HOST for $5.00 off each ticket.

2) Picnic in the Park is an afternoon music festival that benefits Wholesome Wave Georgia (WWG), an organization that makes it possible for hungry families on federal nutrition assistance programs to purchase locally grown produce from area farmers’ markets. Every dollar spent at WWG farmers’ markets translates into healthy food for a hungry family AND dollars for a Georgia farmer.

In addition to supporting a great cause, this event is a great excuse to experience the beautifully-revived Historic Fourth Ward Park and the Eastside Beltline Trail. Why not make a day of it!

Date & Time: May 22, 2016 from 1pm-4pm
Location: Historic Fourth Ward Park, Atlanta
Cost: Picnic in the Park Tickets are $20 per person or $35 per couple

3) Join an Online Conversation: The Internet of Food
Food+Tech Connect is a website that “brings together the leading thinkers and doers from the worlds of food, agriculture, health and technology.” This includes entrepreneurs, investors, executives, designers, technologists, chefs, farmers and journalists who want to understand the top food tech, investment and innovation trends.

During May, the site is hosting the 2nd annual “Internet of Food” series, posing this question: “How might we use technology to guarantee healthy, safe + sufficient food for everyone?” Entertain your brain with “The Future of Grocery Shopping in 10 gifs” or take in something weightier like “The Case for Investing in the Good Supply Chain.”

Date & Time: Any time in May
Location: Food Tech Connect
Cost: FREE
