On Giving Tuesday, Localize Your Impact and Support Second Helpings Atlanta

With the fast approaching Thanksgiving holiday comes this year’s Giving Tuesday, a global day devoted to giving back to the community. On November 27, people all over the country will kick off the charitable giving season, donating money and time to nonprofit organizations across the USA. “On this Giving Tuesday, give thanks by donating to Second Helpings Atlanta, a nonprofit food rescue organization whose mission is to reduce hunger and food waste in the Atlanta metropolitan area,” says Sheri Labovitz, president of Second Helpings Atlanta. “We have already received a $5,000 matching gift so your donation will have double the impact.”

“With your help, SHA can make a difference in the lives of those around you through the rescue and delivery of nutritious, surplus food. A $25 donation helps SHA rescue $400 of nutritious food.  A $100 donation enables SHA to rescue and deliver 780 healthy meals. And if you’re interested in becoming a volunteer, it takes only 90 minutes of your time to make a real impact. That’s how long it takes volunteers to complete a typical food rescue. Whether time or money (or both), your support helps SHA feed the hungry while diminishing food waste locally.”

Second Helpings Atlanta (SHA) is committed to helping those who do not know where their next meal is coming from. On average, 1 out of 6 Georgia residents live in a food insecure environment, yet 40 percent of food produced in the United States each year is never consumed. While many look forward to an abundant holiday season, others throughout the region will not share the same luxury.

Since its launch in 2004, SHA has collected and distributed over 7.1 million pounds of food, enough to provide over 5.9 million meals. With over 85 Food Donors, 55 Partner Agencies and over 470 Volunteer Drivers, SHA has already made significant impact in the Atlanta area, and needs ongoing support to continuously expand their efforts. “Give to Second Helpings Atlanta on this Giving Tuesday because no one should go hungry this holiday season,” urges Labovitz.
